Best practices for georeferencing large scale historical fire insurance maps of the USA
نویسنده
چکیده
There is increasing interest in transforming historical print maps from passive archival documents into value-added digital geospatial data through the process of digitization and georeferencing. Central to this activity is the quantitative evaluation and documentation of the quality of the original map and resulting data product(s) produced. Best practices have been proposed for small scale (i.e. large area) historical print maps, while a similar set of recommendations for large scale (i.e. small area) maps are lacking. The current study presents methods for and the results of a project to digitize and georeference historic fire insurance maps produced by the SanbornTM map company during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the state of Pennsylvania, USA. A random sample of 202 out of approximately 29,000 individual map sheets was evaluated for their horizontal positional accuracy against contemporary reference data. Results were summarized into a set of proposed best practices for georeferencing large scale historic fire insurance maps of the USA.

Investigation of Improvement in Georeferencing of Urban Analog Maps using the Geometric Elements and Genetic Algorithm
A large number of civil registries are available as analog maps that require georeferencing. Besides the quality of the analog maps and control points, the algorithm used for georeferencing also affects the accuracy of the map and the carried out geometrical calculations which indicates the need to study modern Georeferencing Methods. This requires the adoption of georeferencing optimization mo...
متن کاملGeoreferencing the Historical Maps of Rome between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
Historical studies often need to consider both geographic and temporal aspects of the analysed phenomenon. At present, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can provide historians with a series of extremely useful tools for analysing the territory and its temporal transformations. As already known, historical maps may lack of geographic reference systems or may be expressed in systems which ar...
متن کاملGeoreferencing old maps: a polynomial-based approach for Como historical cadastres
Recent developments in digital technologies have opened new and previously unimagined possibilities for the exploitation of cartographic heritage. In particular, georeferencing converts old maps from pure archival documents to real geographic data. This study investigated the issue of georeferencing the historical maps which are currently preserved at the State Archive of Como. These maps, abou...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal corroboration of a fire-scar-based fire history in a frequently burned ponderosa pine forest.
Fire scars are used widely to reconstruct historical fire regime parameters in forests around the world. Because fire scars provide incomplete records of past fire occurrence at discrete points in space, inferences must be made to reconstruct fire frequency and extent across landscapes using spatial networks of fire-scar samples. Assessing the relative accuracy of fire-scar fire history reconst...
متن کاملRestoring and managing low-severity fire in dry-forest landscapes of the western USA
Low-severity fires that killed few canopy trees played a significant historical role in dry forests of the western USA and warrant restoration and management, but historical rates of burning remain uncertain. Past reconstructions focused on on dating fire years, not measuring historical rates of burning. Past statistics, including mean composite fire interval (mean CFI) and individual-tree fire...
